For being such a small and compact radio with a nice price-tag, the R4 feels
luxurious. Everything from the solid cabinet to the first class lacquer says quality. If red, white or black lacquer is not enough, it is also available in leather or walnut finish. Even the nice aluminum button has a blue light. On the rear side there is connection for headphones, and in- and output for external units. On the top you find the buttons for the clock radio function.
The nice four lines OLED display is easily read and has enough space to easily navigate in the menus, station lists, and sound files. The buttons are logically and nicely placed on the unit in a circle around the function button, which is used to scroll and choose in the lists. Luckily this works nicely, as the unit has no remote control. FM and internet radio is complemented by a well functioned media player.
Remembering that this compact unit only leaves space for a 3.5” full-range loudspeaker unit, the sound is very good. Maybe you should not play excessively loud, as the bass has a tendency to hum, but at normal sound levels we have no complaints whatsoever. You can listen to MP3 music in the kitchen and as internet radio it is brilliant.
We cannot be less than impressed over how solid the R4 feels and how luxurious the finish is. In addition its display is very good; a navigation button makes navigation quick and easy. For such a small unit the sound is very good. So if you want a small and beautiful internet radio even with a good sound, the Scansonic R4 is an excellent choice.
